Campaign for Abortion Law Modernisation (CALM) is proud to present a YouTube video about the difficulties Isle of Man women face having to travel off-Island for terminations.
A Freedom Seeker Production by Kara Varetto, this short film features the real stories of Island women, voiced by actresses.
In 2015, 105 women were forced to travel to the UK because of the Isle of Man’s draconian and outdated legislation. CALM collected some of their harrowing stories, told in their own words to make this film.
These 105 women are represented by 105 pairs of shoes, donated by supporters. We hope this helps inform the current debate about lack of compassionate legislation surrounding this issue.
Draft Abortion Reform Bill – have your say
A new private member’s bill to amend the law is currently out for consultation by the Member of the House of Keys hoping to bring it forward later this year.
Dr Alex Allinson, MHK for Ramsey and a general practitioner, would like to hear your views on the proposals before they are debated by politicians.
It is vitally important everybody expresses their views. The Abortion Reform Bill 2017 will go before the House of Keys for its first reading later this year.
The standard parliamentary process will see it have three readings in the House of Keys and Legislative Council before it is finally presented to Tynwald court.
At each stage, CALM would urge supporters to make your views known to your elected representatives.
You can read the draft law here:
You can take part in the consultation process by following this link to an online form:
https://consult.gov.im/office-of-the-clerk-of-tynwald/abortion-reform-bill-2017/consultation/intro/
You can save your progress if you don’t have time to complete the form in one sitting – although it is relatively short.
We sincerely hope this film makes you think about the unjust, discriminatory and harmful situation to which Island women are currently subjected.
